James Cook railway station[1] (also referred to as James Cook University Hospital railway station) is a station that serves the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, England. It also serves the surrounding areas of Park End, Berwick Hills and the new under construction Prissick sports village.[2]
It is located on the Esk Valley Line approximately 2 miles (3 km) south east of Middlesbrough railway station and is operated by Northern Rail who provide all of the station's passenger services.
The new £2.2 million, 113m long single platform station includes a fully lit waiting shelter with seating, CCTV coverage and passenger information via an electronic screen and public address announcements.[3][4]
Projected figures are that the new station could be used for 813 journey trips per day.[5][6]
History
Plans for the building of a station at the hospital had been discussed for some 25 years, including as part of the Tees Valley Metro project. The station was finally given the green light by Middlesbrough Council's planning committee in January 2013 and construction work started in January 2014.[7] The station opened to the public on 18 May 2014,[8] and was opened officially by Minister of State for Transport, Baroness Kramer on 18 July 2014.[9]
