Jam Cruise

Jam Cruise is an annual five-day music-themed cruise, featuring performances by jam, funk, rock, jazz, and electronic artists, as well as workshops, activities, and programs with artists’ involvement.[1] Produced by Cloud 9 Adventures, Jam Cruise has operated fourteen cruises since 2004.[2] The cruise departs from PortMiami, Florida with stops in ports throughout the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico.

Jam Cruise features musical collaborations and musician-led jam sessions throughout the event.[3] The schedule is designed to allow participants to collaborate with performing artists in venues like the “Jam Room” and “Jazz Lounge”, in which musicians rotate in and out of a live stage session.[4] Jam Cruise also runs themed night activities.[5] During the days at sea, music begins at noon and continues on until the early hours of the morning. During port stop days, music typically begins around 5pm as the ship departs from the port.[6]

Jam Cruise also runs a 501(c)(3) charity called Positive Legacy, which organizes a day of service during one of the port stops, where guests and artists volunteer in a local community project and host a private show for local residents. Positive Legacy also hosts a live auction, the proceeds of which fund future projects.[7]

Programs

Masters Camp at Sea

The Masters Camp at Sea program offers participants the opportunity to learn from notable musicians through an immersive program[8] consisting of workshops, master classes, and artist-hosted jam sessions.[9] Previous Masters Camp at Sea musicians include Oteil Burbridge, Ike Stubblefield, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Steve Kimock, John Medeski, Vernon Reid, Col. Bruce Hampton, Victor Wooten, and Butch Trucks.

Brews at Sea

Brews at Sea is a craft beer program launched during Jam Cruise 6, where participating brewers offer select microbrews to guests. SweetWater Brewing Company, Starrhill Brewery, Breckenridge Brewery and Asheville Brewing Company were the first breweries to join the program; other breweries include Magic Hat Brewing Company, Lagunitas Brewing Company, NOLA Brewing, Bell's Brewery, Ninkasi Brewing Company and Elysian Brewing. Jam Cruise 12 introduced the first Brews at Sea Fest, a beer festival in which brewers offered special reserve tastings of their brews, accompanied by brewing discussions and a Q&A.[10]

Chefs at Sea

Chefs at Sea is a culinary program introduced on Jam Cruise 12 where chefs curate late-night buffets. The program rotates chefs, menus, and culinary themes each night.

Yoga at Sea

The Yoga at Sea program offers daily morning and afternoon Vinyasa yoga classes. Yoga teacher Gina Caputo, the founder and director of the Colorado School of Yoga and an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (ERYT-500) through Yoga Alliance, has been the leading yoga instructor for the program since its inception on Jam Cruise 12.

History

The first Jam Cruise took place was organized by music industry professional Mark Brown and destination company Cloud 9 Adventures. Held on the MS Regal Empress from January 6 to 10, 2004, the cruise sailed from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Nassau, Bahamas and Key West, Florida. While the first Jam Cruise (known as Jam Cruise 1) held 800 cruisers and featured 18 bands and artists, the event has grown to accommodate over 3,000 cruisers and more than 40 bands and artists in its' most recent years.[11]
