The Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College, abbreviated as JGEC, is an institute for technical education in the state of West Bengal in India, established in 1961. The college is situated in the Indian city of Jalpaiguri, which is the divisional headquarters of the seven districts of North Bengal.

Since 2011, JGEC has been an autonomous educational institution and the courses conducted by it have the approval of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The college conducts Bachelor's degree (B. Tech) in six branches and Master's degree (M. Tech) in two branches of engineering. The college has been considered 3rd best college in West Bengal after its autonomy.

At the time of its inception, JGEC was affiliated to the Calcutta University. For the period between 1963 and 1999, the college was affiliated to the University of North Bengal, then to the West Bengal University Of Technology.

Geography

JGEC is located in the middle of the "chicken's neck" covering 175 acres, just few kilometres east of the business cities of Jalpaiguri (0 kilometers) and Siliguri (42 kilometers) away. It is located in the neighbourhood of Denguajhar near Patkata Colony in Jalpaiguri City, which is the headquarters of the Jalpaiguri district and also of the Jalpaiguri division, consisting of all the seven districts of North Bengal in the Indian state of West Bengal. To the North is the 'Dooars', meaning the door to Bhutan. Dooars is famous for tea gardens producing CTC Tea, Gorumara National Park, and Jaldapara National Park. There is a view of Mount Kanchanjunga, the third highest peak in the Himalayas from the college campus. To the east, is the river Teesta. The Karala River/Thames of Jalpaiguri flows on the western boundary of the campus. To the south is the National Highway 31(D).

Admissions

Admission is through the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) conducted by the West Bengal Joint Examination Admissions Board (WBJEEB). Lateral admissions are through the Joint Entrance Examination of Lateral Entry (JELET), also conducted by WBJEEB.

The college was affiliated to the West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT), but from the 2012-2016 batch it will become an auotonomous government engineering college approved by (University Grants Commission) UGC and is supposed to become a Deemed University within a few years.

Campus life

JGEC is a residential institution, with over 1600 students residing on campus. It has active clubs and organizations such as Music Club, Drama Club, Magazine Club, Photography Club, Nature Club, Trekking Club, Art Club, Athletic Club, Center for Innovation, Literary Society and others. Campus has two playing grounds: one for cricket known as Oval and another for football.

Students' Union

The JGEC students' union is the only one which does not belong to any political influence among all the Government colleges in the state of west Bengal. It is formed by an elected General Secretary, Assistant General Secretary, Cashier and a Spokesperson along with Class Representatives of all sections of students and the Secretaries and Cashiers of the Student Activity Clubs of the institution.

JECLAT - Annual Social Cultural Festival

The annual cultural fest of Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College is JECLAT. It runs for 8 days in the month of March .It is the largest inter-college fest of North Bengal . Elementary, an online puzzle competition is also held during the fest along with an online photography competition. A total of 22 cultural events ranging from Singing,Acting,Dancing to Debates,Painting and Gaming is held during 5 days . An annual reunion session organised by the Alumni Association of the college is also held besides a day devoted to National Seminars on matters relating to Emerging trends and future of Technology .On the final day, a Social Night is held in which artists and bands come and perform in front of a live audience .
