Jakub Petružálek[1] (born April 24, 1985) is a Czech professional ice hockey center who is currently an unrestricted free agent, he most recently played with Russian team Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).

Playing career

Petružálek played in his native Czech Republic with HC Litvínov in the Czech Extraliga before he was drafted by the New York Rangers, 266th overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Before having a chance to play for the Rangers, he was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes along with a fifth-round conditional pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft (Tomáš Kubalík) for Brad Isbister.[2]

On May 15, 2009, Jakub left the Hurricanes organization, having appeared in 2 NHL games and signed with Finnish club, Lukko Rauma of the then SM-liiga for the 2009–10 season.[3] For the 2011–12 season, Petružálek moved to the Russian based Kontinental Hockey League and signed a contract with Amur Khabarovsk.

On May 28, 2014, Petruzalek signed with his fourth KHL club, Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg on a one-year contract for the 2014–15 season.[4] After 23 games scoring 4 goals and 16 points, Petruzalek was given an immediate mutual release from his contract with Avtomobilist on November 19, 2014, in order to return to for bereavement in Litvínov, Czech Republic.[5]

Personal

While playing in Russia with Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg, Petruzalek's girlfriend of 5 years, Fashion model and Kickboxing champion Katerina Netolicka, was found deceased in their apartment in Litvínov, Czech Republic on November 12, 2014.[6] Petruzalek immediately ceased his contract in Russia to return to his native Czech Republic for the remainder of the season.[7]
