Jakarta Flood Canal
Jakarta Flood Canal is a canal that was made to divert flow of Ciliwung River to outside of Batavia instead of going through the city. This canal was Prof H van Breen idea from Burgelijke Openbare Werken or BOW (later change to Ministry of Public Works) in 1920. The study was made after big flood hit Jakarta or Batavia 2 years earlier. The main concept is to control the water flow of the rivers in Jakarta.
Between 1919 and 1920, the flood canal was made from Manggarai on the south of Batavia to Muara Angke on the north of the city. The canal is equipped with Manggarai Floodgate and Karet Floodgate.[1]
West and East Flood Canal
With the help of Netherlands Engineering Consultants, finally the "Master Plan for Drainage and Flood Control of Jakarta" is ready in December 1973. According to this plan, flood control of Jakarta will be focused in two canal that encircled the city.
The canal will allocate the water flows from the south of the city and then later flowed to the sea. Later the canals will be known as West Flood Canal and East Flood Canal. This is one of the effort to control the flood in Jakarta beside the construction of reservoir and placed pumps in the area that is lower below sea level.
In the master plan, system of canals was planned to cut to the flow of water in West Jakarta. This was the continuation of Van Breen canal and later known as West Flood Canal. Due to the location of the canal was in heavily populated area, the construction of the canal is delayed following the problem of clearing the land.
After flood in West Jakarta in January 1979, the central government along with the provincial government of Jakarta to prevent this again by revising the west flood canal plan by constructing the Cengkareng Drainage system.[1] This system built in 1983.
West Flood Canal
West Flood Canal or usually called as West Kali Malang was started in 1922. The star of the canal is in Manggarai going to the west of the city through Pasar Rumput, Dukuh Atas and going to northwest to Karet Kubur and continued to Tanah Abang, Tomang, Grogol, Pademangan, and ends at Muara Angke.
East Flood Canal
East Flood Canal was made to control the flood in the eastern part of Jakarta. The canal is 23.6 km from East Jakarta to North Jakarta.[2] The wide of the canal is 100 to 300 m.[2] It depends on the location of the canal. The construction began in 22 June 2002.[2] This project has been delayed due to the problem in freeing the area for the canal and supporting infrastructure.[3]
East flood canal was planned to diver the Ciliwung River, Cipinang River, Sunter River, Buaran River, Jati Kramat River, and Cakung River.[2]
During the 2013 Jakarta Flood, the east flood canal was not filled with water. This was due to no connection between Ciliwung River with the canal. Ciliwung River is connected to the West Flood Canal. This caused the west flood canal to overflowed and flooded the street in the western part of Jakarta. In order to utilize the east flood canal effectively, there government planned to connect the east flood canal with Ciliwung River by constructing an underground tunnel from the river to the east flood canal[4]
