Jacob Waldemar de la Rose (born May 20, 1995) is a Swedish ice hockey player. He is currently playing with the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League (NHL). De la Rose was selected by the Canadiens in the second round (34th overall) of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

Since 2010, De la Rose has played for the Swedish national teams at the junior levels, winning silver medals at the 2012 IIHF World U18 Championships and the 2013 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.[1]

Personal life

Jacob's father, Anders de la Rose,[2] is a retired ice hockey player[3] and a former Swedish youth hockey coach.[4] Playing from 1994 through 1996, Anders participated in 43 games and had 17 total points with the Arvika HC,[5] formally of Sweden's Division 1 league.

Anders' elder son and Jacob's only sibling,[6] Erik de la Rose, is currently a defenseman for the Storhamar Dragons in Hamar, Norway.[7] He also has a sister.

Playing career

The Montreal Canadiens had the 34th overall draft pick as the result of a trade occurring on February 27, 2012. That exchange sent Andrei Kostitsyn to the Nashville Predators in return for this pick and for the cancellation of another 5th round pick that they'd previously given to Nashville in trade involving Hal Gill that took place 10 days earlier, on February 17, 2012.[8] They selected Jacob in the 2nd round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, hosted by the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on June 30, 2013. That night he was the 10th European picked. Prior to actually being drafted, he was ranked as the 7th European skater by the NHL Central Scouting Bureau's 2013 final draft scouting report.[9]

In 2013's European Import Draft, which took place on July 3, the Windsor Spitfires chose de la Rose at 11th overall.[10] Though the Spits's general manager, Warren Rychel, seemed to think that Jacob's North American debut via his team was a sure thing, Jacob ended up staying in Sweden to fulfill the last year of his contract with Leksand.[11]

Professional

Starting in the 2011–2012 season and ending with the 2013–2014 one, Jacob was a member of Leksands IF's hockey team. He played in 87 games and left with an even 25 points.[12] Jacob is good friends[13] with his former Leksand teammate Filip Forsberg, who also happens to be his two-time World Junior's captain.

In the 2014–15 season, de la Rose made the transition to North America and began his career with the Canadiens in the American Hockey League with their affiliate, the Hamilton Bulldogs. He opened scoring with his first AHL goal in a game that ended in a 3-4 loss against the Adirondack Flames. Finnish-born goalie Joni Ortio was in net for the opposing team.[14] Jacob registered his first NHL point in his fifth NHL game on February 12, 2015, an assist on Christian Thomas' first NHL goal.[15]

De la Rose and his team obtained a silver medal during the 2012 IIHF World U18 Championships in the Czech Republic. His other appearance at a World U18 Championship was the following year, 2013, in Sochi, Russia, where he captained the team.

In addition to the 2013 u18 tournament, Jacob was invited to participate in the IIHF World Junior Championships (u20) earlier that year. These were held in Ufa, Russia. He also attended next year's Malmö games, the 2014 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, in his home country of Sweden. Both years resulted in silver medal victories.

Jacob served as Sweden's captain during the 2015 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.
