Jack Van Ryder
Jack Van Ryder (July 7, 1899 – March 23, 1967) was born near Tucson, Arizona in a town called Continental. He spent his early years driving cattle in the American southwest, painting backdrops on Hollywood back-lots and serving in the military. Self-taught, Ryder's soft pastels colored paintings captured the dusty bruding southwestern twilight skies. Jack van Ryder's exhibitions included the Gainsborough Galleries and the Montross Gallery in New York. Ryder died of a self-inflicted gunshot would on March 23, 1967.
