Jack Laugher /lɔː/ (born 30 January 1995) is a British diver.
Diving career
Laugher won the one-metre and three-metre springboard titles at the 2010 European Junior Championships and the 2010 World Junior Championships.[1] He represented England at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.[2] He was selected for the Great Britain 2012 London Olympics team. On 6 August 2012, he competed in the Men's 3 metre springboard,[1] but he failed to make it to the semi-final stage. In 2012 Laugher also became the Junior World champion in both the 3m springboard and 3m Synchro competition with Tom Daley. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, he won the Gold medal in the 1 metre springboard.
Greg Louganis has been reported as being impressed with Laugher's diving.[3] Laugher has stated that his name is pronounced 'Law'[4] as it is commonly mistaken.
In October 2013 he took on the role of Ambassador for the sport of VX.[5]
Personal life
In October 2013 Laugher was interviewed and did a photoshoot for Gay Times.[6] Although himself heterosexual, Laugher called for greater tolerance of gay althletes and revealed that he would be comfortable as an openly gay diver, saying: "Yeah definitely! Any sport you should be able to be openly gay in. I have quite a few gay friends, just from school and people I’ve met through diving and my journey. Everyone should feel comfortable to be gay and be who they are."[7]
In July 2014 that he announced that he was planning to share a flat with diving partner Chris Mears.[8]
