The Class C56 is a type of 2-6-0 steam locomotive built by the Japanese Government Railways (JGR) from 1935 to 1942, and later operated by Japanese National Railways (JNR). A total of 165 Class C56 locomotives were built.
Preserved examples
- C56 15: State Railway of Thailand. Carries SRT cab number 713. Previously used for steam hauled specials, e.g. to the Death Railway (Thonburi - Namtok, Kanchanaburi).
- C56 31: Yūshūkan Japanese military and war museum. Used in Burma and Thailand during the construction of the Death Railway and subsequently post war when it was purchased from Thai Railways and brought back to Japan.
