J'Leon Love (born September 25, 1987) is an American professional boxer in the Super Middleweight division where he is the current WBA International Super Middleweight Champion. He is managed by Al Haymon and made his first appearance on April 16, 2011 at the Foxwoods Resort in Mashantucket. His agent is J. R. Rickert of New York. He is trained by Angel Carabello, Nelson Figeuroa, Rodney Christler and strength and conditioning trainer and cutman Bob Ware Jr. Love trains out of the Mayweather Boxing Gym in Las Vegas, Nevada.[2]

Amateur career

After his father turned him onto boxing,[3] Love had an amateur career record of 115-5. He has represented the USA team in many international tournaments, including the 2008 Olympics. His opponents have included Shawn Porter, Dennis Douglin.[4]

Professional career

On January 29, 2010 Love made his professional debut by knocking out Vince Burkhalter in the first round of a four-round middleweight bout. Love knocked Burkhalter down twice before the referee reached the count of 10 at 1:33.[5]

On September 8, 2012 Love fought Ramon Valenzuela in the opening bout of Showtime Championship Boxing.[6] Love won by disqualification in the eighth round.

On May 4, 2013 Love fought Gabriel Rosado on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather vs Robert Guerrero. Prior to the fight, Love came two hours late to the weigh-in, and at the weigh-in he was 1.5 lbs over the weight limit. He took an extra hour to make the weight and was fined $100 as a result. The fight was very close, and although Love won by split decision, the majority of viewers thought that Rosado actually won the fight. The judges' score cards read 95-94 97-92 for Love and 95-94 for Rosado.[7]

After the fight, Love tested positive for hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic used by athletes to cut weight. The drug is banned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Because of the failed drug test, the decision was overturned from a split decision win for Love to a no contest.[8]

On August 30, 2014, Love faced fringe contender Rogelio Medina. Medina had recently been stopped by fellow Money Team super middleweight contender Badou Jack, and was not viewed as a threat. However in the third round, Medina suddenly landed a vicious left hook that momentarily separated Love from his senses and dropped him. Love attempted to rise, his right leg twitching violently, but was unable to and the referee stopped the match.
