Italian football clubs have entered European association football competitions (UEFA Champions League/European Cup, UEFA Cup/Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, UEFA Intertoto Cup and the now defunct UEFA Cup Winners' Cup) since season 1955-56, when Milan took part in European Cup competition. Nowadays, Italian football is the fourth force in Europe according to UEFA ranking, following the Spanish, English and German football.[2] The golden age of Italian football was mostly the decade of 90, when Italian club dominated in UEFA competitions, winning the most titles and holding steady the first place in UEFA ranking. The last years, the force of Italian football has decreased, mainly after the Calciopoli scandal.[3]

So far, the Italian clubs have won 12 times the Champions League/European Cup (Milan, Inter and Juventus), 9 times the Europa League/Uefa cup (Internazionale, Juventus, Parma, Napoli), 7 times the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup (Milan, Fiorentina, Juventus, Lazio, Parma, Sampdoria), 9 times the UEFA Super Cup (Milan, Juventus, Lazio, Parma), 4 times the UEFA Intertoto Cup (Bologna, Juventus, Perugia, Udinese) and 1 times the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (Roma).[4]
