Irine Kharisma Sukandar (born 7 April 1992 in Jakarta) is an Indonesian chess player. She is Indonesia's first chess Woman Grand Master (WGM). In 2014, she became the first Indonesian female to reach a full International Master (IM) title.[1]

Career

Sukandar has represented Indonesia in five Chess Olympiads, in 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2014. Her best result was at the 36th Chess Olympiad in Calviá 2004, where she scored 10/12 and won the silver medal on board 3.[2]

Sukandar scored 7/9 and won the 6th ASEAN U16 Girls Chess Championship in Pattaya, Thailand in June 2005.[3] Later that year she scored 7.5/9 and came third in the 2005 Jababeka Women's International tournament, behind Jana Krivec and Nana Alexandria.[4]

In June 2007, she came equal second, with Jana Krivec, in the Jakarta EWS Cup, behind Regina Pokorna.[5]

Sukandar jointly won the 10th Rector Cup Women's event in Kharkiv, Ukraine in March 2008.[6] The following month she came third in the 2008 Japfa Chess Festival WGM event in Jakarta, behind Li Ruofan and Regina Pokorna.[7]

She came equal fourth in the Asian Zonal 3.3 Chess Championships in Ho Chi Minh City in 2009.[8]

In July 2010, Sukandar scored 7/9 and came equal first in the Brunei Invitational IM Tournament, earning an open International Master (IM) norm result.[9]

Sukandar scored 7/9 and won the Asian Women's Chess Championship in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in May 2012 and has thus qualified to play in the Women's World Chess Championship 2014.[10][11][12]

In May 2013, Sukandar won the 5th Alexander The Great Open, in Halkidiki, Greece ahead of Mert Erdoğdu.[13] In December 2013 she won two individual gold medals, for Rapid and Blitz chess, at the 2013 Southeast Asian Games held in Naypyidaw, Myanmar.[14]

In April 2014, Sukandar won the 2014 Asian Women's Chess Championship in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. She collected a total of 7.0/9 points.[15] With this win, she also qualified for the Chess World Cup to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan.

In Februari 2015, Sukandar won Moscow Open G Section (female student, 10 players round robin). Sukandar collected 7.5/9 points. She was 2 points ahead of the runner up, Alina Kashlinskaya. [16]
