Iraqi nationality law

Iraqi nationality is transmitted by paternity (father). However, this gives the right to Iraqi to transmit citizenship to their children and foreign wives.

The code

The first nationality law was passed in 1924, and on the 6 August that year, all people within the bounds of Iraqi jurisdiction automatically acquired Iraqi citizenship.

Dual citizenship

As per the 2006 reforms, Iraq recognises dual nationality. Prior to then, Iraqi nationals who acquired another citizenship lost their Iraqi citizenship automatically. Some country's nationality laws (among them Japan's) nonetheless require their nationals to choose between keeping that country's citizenship or keeping their Iraqi citizenship.
