International House (Commonly abbreviated as IH) is a residential college situated on the St Lucia campus of the University of Queensland. They provide fully catered accommodation for 200 undergraduate students, and self catered accommodation for 38 post graduate and mature aged undergraduate students.

International House's residents are 50% Australian and 50% International students from approximately 35 different countries. International House quotes itself saying that they provide a supportive and safe environment while offering opportunities that allow a broad and rich educational, social and cultural experience.

The current director of International House is Dr. Carla Tromans & current student club President is Matthew Grant.

History

International House Brisbane was founded in 1965. Planning for the college commenced in 1955 through the Rotary Club of Brisbane and as part of the celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of Rotary International. When International House opened in 1965 Dr Ivor Cribb was appointed Warden.

Academic life

International House has a vast amount of resources for college students as well as a study room, computer lab and tutorials. Two senior tutors are also available for Academic Assistance to all residents.

Sporting life

IH is well known to have the unique opportunity to offer residents the opportunity to play sports – even if it your first time! Having this in mind, IH shows a great team spirit on the field and great participation. For those who are off field, supporters don black and gold (IH college colours) to support their fellow Housies, and vocalise their love for IH with many chants to show college spirit. IH has excelled in Volleyball, Soccer & Table Tennis in recent years. Residents also have free access to the University of Queensland Gym & Aquatics Facilities.

Cultural & social life

International House is renowned for excelling in the cultural field. IH achieves high levels of performance and success in the ICC Cultural Cup Competition. Cultural events include: Debating, College Idol, Public Speaking, One Act Play, Dancefest, Choralfest, and our very own IH organised event, Bandfest. To top this off, however, at IH runs their own in-house Variety Night, where residents (both spontaneously and premeditatedly) show off their various talents whether they be musical, comical, dramatic, dance… basically anything goes!

The college's social events calendar keeps residents busy, providing opportunities to mingle and meet people from all over the world. College parties (including the infamous gender bender, “Switch Party”), night tours of Brisbane, a spectacular fancy dress Boatcruise, the glamorous IH Ball, ladies’ and gents’ nights out, and inter-college get-togethers are all part of the action-packed IH life.

International House organizes both Bandfest, an annual college battle-of-the-bands, and Soiree, an annual international festival open to the public.

Rooms

International House is divided into 11 buildings or 'towers' boasting the largest student accommodation in room size on Campus. Towers A to I are for undergraduate students and Towers J and K are for post graduate and mature aged undergraduate students (25 years and over). Each Tower consists of 5 to 6 levels. Each floor of each tower (for undergraduate students) houses 4 to 5 residents with a shared bathroom (and washing bases and toilet) as well as common room.

Location

International House is in close proximity to both Cromwell College and Grace College, and collectively they are known as FROTH or 'Friends On The Hill'.
