Awards

The IBS has been rewarded for the quality of its International Business & Management Studies (IBMS) by the NVAO (in Dutch: Nederlands-Vlaamse Accreditatieorganisatie). The NVAO is the Dutch-Flemish Accreditation Organization assigned by the Minister of Education to execute accreditations for all institutes of higher education in the Netherlands and Belgium. The tested criteria are among other organizational objectives, curricula, personnel, quality management and facilities.

The IBS has been awarded by the Network of International Business Schools (NIBS- accrediting schools on internationalization) as a highly comprehensive international institution, with a learning environment based on English language where students have the ability to choose their study abroad location based on their study results.

Academic year

IBMS is a four-year programme and each year consists of two study semesters. Each semester is divided into two ten-week periods including an exam period at the end of each period. The academic year usually starts at 1 September and ends after four study blocks at the end of June.

IBMS Groningen Education Type

IBMS focuses on teaching students practically. Students work in different project groups every block with fellow students from different cultures, having an integrated assignment that relates to all other courses that come to complete the educational programme. Students focus on presentation skills, working internationally with a strong business focus.

Training is also provided in specific skills essential to successful future careers, such as giving and receiving feedback, working in groups, intercultural sensitivity, customer orientation and presentation skills.

Academic counseling is provided throughout all phases of the IBMS programme. In the first year, academic advice concentrates on following students’ study progress, helping students cope with the transfer to higher education and determining if the IBMS programme is suitable for the student in general. In the second and subsequent years, the Academic Advisor continues to monitor the students’ study progress, completes (together with the student) a study plan (for the Study Abroad specifically, the study plan is made together with their Study Abroad supervisor) and helps them to solve problems and interpret IBS rules.

Bachelor Programmes

The International Business & Management Studies programme will provide students with a broad understanding of international business. This programme balances theoretical and practical knowledge in order to prepare students you for the global workplace.

After completing their first two years of study, students choose from one of the following specialisations: International Marketing, International Management or International Finance. The programme’s international character is reflected in, among other things, students working and studying abroad for two semesters at one of the 50 partner schools of the Hanze University of Applied Sciences.

Master Programmes

The MBA programme consists of three semesters of study within a fourteen-month period. During the first and second semester, ten subjects will be offered in which various aspects of management will be dealt with. Among others, these include the four functional areas (Marketing Management, Human Resource Management, Operations Management and Financial Management), Personal Skills Training and two core subjects General Management and Strategic Management. Extensive use of case studies and personal experiences will provide the necessary link between theory and practice. The integration of the various disciplines and the role of the manager will be a key issue within the programme. The programme is completed with a thesis, which involves an assignment to analyze and solve a strategic problem within a company.

The MBA in International Business & Management programme consists of three semesters of study within a fourteen calendar month period. The first semester includes a residential introduction course. Students are expected to take one semester in Groningen and one in Cambridge. The third may be spent anywhere in the world.

Programme content IBMS Groningen

In the first year, subjects are linked by a practical business case; in one of the semesters, students apply the knowledge acquired in their roles as consultants for a company needing advice. In the other semester, a similar structure is used; students develop a business plan in which they learn how to sell a product or service, how to organize a company and establish its legal form, and how to convince a financial institution to invest in their company.

The second year combines in-depth international business subjects with electives relating to specific fields of study that prepare the student for the next year abroad, Subjects include: Supply Chain Management, Business Research Methods, and Career Training and Development.

During the third year (study and placement semester abroad) students spend one semester studying at one of the 50 partner schools abroad (in Western and Eastern Europe, North and South America, Australia and the Far East). It provides a unique opportunity to broaden both knowledge and experience of different cultures. The other semester in the third year is spent working in a company outside of students’ home countries.

The fourth year offers both core and elective modules related to the majors (specialization). Students participate in a final graduation project in which they are regarded as consultants for an external company. Students obtain, define, analyze and research a business-related problem, write a final report and present/defend their findings in an oral presentation.
