The International Association of Immunization Managers (IAIM) is a program of the Sabin Vaccine Institute. IAIM is a membership organization whose members include immunization managers at the national and sub-national level from both the public and private sectors and other professionals interested in immunizations.[1]

History

The International Association of Immunization Managers, established with the help of a five-year grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was found in attempt to drive the achievement of international, national and regional immunization goals including those outlined in the Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP).[2] The IAIM supports immunization professionals through fostering of forward-thinking and superior management of immunization programs. Founded and headed by the Sabin Vaccine Institute, the Institute is responsible for executing IAIM’s day-to-day operations.

Objectives

IAIM serves as a forum for which immunization managers can discuss and exchange best practices that build and support international and regional networks of immunization managers, and provide immunization managers with opportunities to improve their technical and leadership capacity.[1]

Members discuss the best practices for overcoming immunisation challenges in their countries.

Immunization managers manage and integrate all of the elements needed for a successful immunization program, including an effective cold chain, reliable funding and effective surveillance systems. The IAIM also serves as a forum for immunization managers to discuss and exchange best practices, build and support international and regional networks and gain opportunities to develop technical and leadership capacity.[3]

Leadership and Governing Council

Peter Carrasco, the Director of the IAIM Secretariat, leads this effort.

The Governing Council is composed of individuals from all parts of the world who are either current immunization managers or who have relevant leadership experience in immunizations. The following individuals are the members of the association’s first Governing Council that was voted upon by participants at the IAIM's Inaugural Conference in March 2015:

Conferences and Meetings

IAIM Inaugural Conference On March 3-4, 2015, members of IAIM representing 70 countries worldwide came together in Istanbul, Turkey, for the association's first global conference. The two-day event featured guest speakers:

The conference also included other notable speakers providing both insight and information for IAIM’s members who attended the conference. Participants had the opportunity to network and share best practices with their counterparts from around the world.

IAIM Regional Meetings Middle East and North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa IAIM held its first ever regional meeting for immunization professions in the Middle East, North Africa, and Sub-Saharan African countries on September 25-26, 2014 in Durban, South Africa. Nearly 50 members from across these two regions came together to share their experiences and challenges in managing national immunization programs and to begin shaping the association. Participants engaged in networking and breakout sessions to exchange best practices and lessons learned in order to improve the impact of their programs.

IAIM Webinars Meet your IAIM: The First Public Webinar of the International Association of Immunization Managers On Thursday, 20 March 2014, the IAIM ad hoc Governing Council and Secretariat hosted two Webinar sessions for IAIM members and the general public. Sixty-five participants representing every region of the world attended. Attendees had the opportunity to learn more about IAIM’s vision and objectives, to tour the IAIM website, and to meet the ad hoc Governing Council. They were also introduced to IAIM’s two premiere benefits for current immunization managers: the Peer-to-Peer Exchange Program and the Training Scholarship Program. Participants were informed of tentative dates and locations for the IAIM Conference and Regional Meetings, and engaged in lively question and answer sessions with the ad hoc Governing Council.
