Insurance commissioner
Insurance commissioner (or commissioner of insurance) is an executive office in many U.S. states, some in the state cabinet. The office differs state by state:
- In some states the insurance commissioner is a constitutional office established by the state constitution; in other states the office was created by statute;
- In some states the insurance commissioner is an elected official; in other states they are appointed by the governor;
- In some states the insurance department or division is autonomous; in other states such a department is part of a larger body.
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) is a professional association for these individuals.
