The Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES) is an organisation which leads debate, dissemination and promotion of environmental science and sustainability. The institution is devoted to championing the role of environmental science in ensuring the well-being of humanity now and in the future.
It is a charitable organisation, which promotes and raises public awareness of environmental science by supporting professional scientists and academics working in the area.
History
The Institution of Environmental Sciences was founded in 1971. The institution is consulted by the British government and other interested parties on environmental issues. The IES has ties with higher education and promotes and supports environmental sciences and sustainable development in universities and colleges nationally and internationally.
Membership
Joining the IES helps environmental scientists' personal and professional development. The IES offers a variety of membership services that can help their members gain professional recognition and progress to the next level. The IES's members are established in all areas of the environment sector.
Membership of the institution allows access to:

- Regional and national events
- Restricted resources on the website
- Application for Chartered Scientist (CSci) and Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) designations
- Recognition of professional status
- CPD recording tools

Services
The IES runs two schemes to assist members looking for work in the field of environmental sciences:
- The ‘Into Work’ scheme is available to graduates starting their career in environmental sciences
- The ‘Back to Work’ scheme is dedicated to unemployed members who are seeking work in the field
Both of these schemes include the IES mentoring scheme and CV clinic.
Affiliations
The IES is a member of the Society for the Environment, the Science Council and the European Federation of Associations of Environmental Professionals. Through its training work in sustainable development it has developed links with the Environment Agency, Forum for the Future, and other professional bodies. The IES works with the Committee of Heads of Environmental Science to accredit programmes of study in universities and to support and promote the discipline in higher education.
Through its support for the development of the Institute of Air Quality Management, the IES has developed links with air quality organisations - including Environmental Protection UK.
The IES works with all of these partners, on behalf of its members, to advance the environmental science field and individual professional development.
Publications
The IES produces four to five editions of its journal environmental SCIENTIST each year. Articles are written by experts and professionals working in the environmental field. Each issue examines a topic of importance to environmental science; an expert in the area acts as guest editor, introducing the articles and providing an overview of the subject at hand. Previous editions of the journal can be viewed on the IES website.
The IES produces reports that are available to download from the website.
In addition to the journal and reports, the IES produces a monthly newsletter, EnviroSci News, focusing on a lighter dissemination of expert knowledge and the sharing of institution news.
Awards
The IES launched the John Rose Award to publicise a piece of outstanding post-graduate environmental science research that will inform and motivate the general public.
