The Innocence + Experience Tour (styled as iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE) is an upcoming worldwide concert tour by rock band U2. In support of the band's 2014 album Songs of Innocence, the tour will visit arenas throughout 2015. It will be U2's first time playing arenas since 2005–2006 on their Vertigo Tour.[1] Opening on 14 May in Vancouver, Canada, the Innocence + Experience Tour will comprise two legs, one featuring concerts in North America from May through July, and a second featuring concerts in Europe from September through November. A total of 70 concert dates have been announced, with plans for additional shows in Dublin at the end of the tour to be announced in the future.[2]

Shows were predominantly booked in pairs for each market, with the original intention for the setlist to alternate between "innocence" and "experience" motifs night-to-night.[3] However, the band decided to alter their plans out of fear of disappointing concertgoers with the differences between setlists. Instead, the group intends to play a fixed set of songs for the first-half of each show with a varying second half, separated by an intermission–a first for U2 concerts.[4] The stage will span the length of the venue floor and will be divided into 3 sections: a long rectangular segment that can illuminate as an "I" to represent "innocence"; a smaller circular stage that can illuminate as an "E" to represent "experience"; and a walkway between them.[4] For the tour, U2's sound system will be moved to the venue ceilings and arranged in an oval array; the band hopes the change will improve acoustics by evenly distributing sound throughout the arena.[4]

Background

On 9 September 2014, U2 released their thirteenth studio album Songs of Innocence. It received mixed reviews from critics but was a commercial success worldwide. After months of speculation for a tour, the band announced 44 shows in nineteen cities in North America and Europe beginning in May. It follows their widely successful 360° Tour which went on to become the highest-grossing concert tour with $736 million in ticket sales. Pre-sale tickets were available for fan club members on 4 December before going on-sale to the general public on 8 December. The tour will find the band performing in confined arenas rather than stadiums like previous tours.[1] Initial dates for the tour sold out quickly, prompting Live Nation to add more shows, further extending the tour.[5]
