The Inner Ring Road (IRR), also known as Jawaharlal Nehru Salai or 100 Feet road (SH 2) is a major transportation corridor being developed in the Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA) by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA). It is 25.2 km long with three distinct arms viz., Northern arm, Central arm and Southern arm, connecting SH 49A (Rajiv Gandhi Salai) in Tiruvanmiyur, Velachery main road at Vijayanagar, NH 45 (GST road) at Kathipara, NH 4 at Koyambedu, NH 205 at Padi, NH 5 at Madhavaram and joins SH 104 (TPP Road) near Manali.[1]

Details of the corridor

The IRR is a 6 lane road with different modes of mass transits planned along the median in different arms. It is 30 km long with the section between OTA and Kathipara Junction (1.5 km) being shared with NH 45. The northern and central arms together form State Highway 2.

Northern Arm (6 km)

The northern arm of IRR starts from Padi Junction and joins SH 104 (TPP) near Manali. It connects NH5 at Madhavaram Junction. A part of the elevated BRTS is planned along the median of this arm. This section is being strengthened by the NHAI as a part of the port connectivity project.

Central Arm (18 km)

The CMBT in Koyambedu is the terminus for all intercity bus services from Chennai. It is one of the largest bus stations in Asia.[2]

The central arm extends from Kathipara Junction and ends at Padi Junction. It connects NH 45 at Kathipara Junction, NH4 at Koyambedu Junction and NH 205 at Padi Junction. A segment of Corridor 2 of the Chennai Metro is under construction along the median of IRR from Kathipara Junction till Koyambedu. Major landmarks along this section include Hilton Chennai, Radha Regent Hotel, Arihant Majestic Towers, Udayam Theatre, the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus, the Koyambedu grade separator and the State Election Commission,.

Southern Arm (9.5 km)

The Olympia Tech Park located in the Southern Arm

The southern arm of IRR extends from IT corridor in the form of Taramani Link Road and joins NH 45 at Officers Training Academy before ending at Kathipara Junction. The Taramani Link Road is being six-laned under TNUDP-III with World Bank assistance while the section from Velachery MRTS station to OTA is being developed newly by the State Highways department. The MRTS Phase II extension is under construction along the median of this section.[3] The Chennai RBTW is being planned along the Taramani Link Road.

The road has several important junctions with grade seperators and flyovers. Chief among them are the Kathipara Grade Separator, the Koyambedu Grade Separator, and the Padi Rotary. Other important flyovers include the Thirumangalam flyover.

An elevated segment of Corridor 2 of the Chennai Metro runs along the median of the IRR from Koyambedu till the Kathipara junction.
