Indooroopilly Shopping Centre is a major regional shopping centre in the western suburb of Indooroopilly, which is located in the city of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is the largest shopping centre in the western suburbs of Brisbane, by gross lettable area, and contains the only Myer store in that region.[1]

History

The centre was constructed and opened in 1970 by The Westfield Group. The entire area was first cleared of the residents and their homes, mostly Queenslander style houses. At its opening, it was reputedly the largest shopping mall in the Southern Hemisphere.[2] This title has since been overtaken by newer centres. The centre has undergone extensive renovations since its opening. Some of these include an 8 screen cinema complex operated by Birch Carroll and Coyle in 1987, the addition of a third level in 1995 and the extension and upgrade of the cinema complex into a 16 screen (including Gold Class) Megaplex in 1998. Until 2000, Indooroopilly Shopping Centre was known as Westfield Shoppingtown Indooroopilly.[3]

In 2000, The Westfield Group sold its 50% joint venture stake in the centre to Commonwealth Funds Management (CFM) for $300 million.[4] CFM, through its management of the Commonwealth Property Fund (CPF), was the other partner in the joint venture, owning the other 50% stake and giving them full ownership of the centre as a result of the sale. In 2005, CPF (while managed by Colonial First State Property) sold 50% of the centre to the Public Sector and Commonwealth Superannuation Schemes (PSS/CSS).[5] Indooroopilly Shopping Centre is owned by Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation and is managed by Eureka Funds Management as Investment Manager.

The $450 million Indooroopilly Shopping Centre redevelopment is underway with completion expected in mid-2014. As part of the redevelopment, shoppers can look forward to a new David Jones, a revitalised Myer, new Coles supermarket to join Woolworths and a new outdoor dining precinct. The Centre will also welcome 120 new speciality stores, including an exciting array of Australian and international fashion brands, taking the total number of speciality stores to 340.[6]

On 1 November 2012, Indooroopilly's first redevelopment milestone was met with the opening of the new Target store and 6 children's fashion retailers in a new Children's zone on level 2 replacing the old Harvey Norman store.

The second redevelopment milestone was met with the opening of the new Woolworths Supermarket and Gourmet Fresh Precinct on Level One (where Myer's level 1 was previously located) on 24 July 2013. Closely followed by the opening of a new Kmart store on 5 September 2013 (in Target's old location), plus a variety of new specialty stores and over 350 new undercover carparks.

The third redevelopment milestone began with the opening of the Next Generation Coles Supermarket on level 1 on the 29th of March 2014 (most of Woolworths old location). The following weeks welcomed an additional 20 retailers including Daiso, Liquorland and JB HiFi plus acclaimed fashion retailers Trenery, Florsheim and Rodd & Gunn.

On the 14th of April 2014, the Myer end of the new two level parallel fashion mall opened. Indooroopilly welcomed over 30 new fashion labels including Mimco, Sambag, Saba, L'Occitane, Lululemon Athletica, Nike and City Beach.

On May 1st 2014, Indooroopilly welcomed retail powerhouse David Jones plus an additional 70 retailers and over 500 more Car parks. The new retail precinct includes a national and international fashion designer precinct including International Designers Armani Collezioni, Hugo Boss, Georg Jensen, Max & Co, Calibre, Ted Baker, Brooks Brothers, Carla Zampatti and Australian Fashion Designers Zimmerman, Sass & Bide, Manning Cartell and Scanlan Theodore.

The 1st of May also introduced to the centre a new alfresco dining precinct located on Station Road. New restaurants include Nantucket, Ole Fuego, Harajuku Gyoza, Nitrogenie and The Mero. Pig & Whistle has since been refurbished to compliment this new precinct.

International fashion retail icon H&M will open in the centre in March 2015.
