The Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology (IGIT) is located at Sarang in the industrial belt of Talcher, Angul district in the Indian state of Odisha. It was established in 1982 by the government of Odisha. In addition to four year Undergraduate degrees, it offers three year Diploma courses in a few technical disciplines and a 3- year postgraduate degree in computer applications. The college has 172 acres (0.70 km2) of land and it is situated near the Brahmani River. In addition to this 200 acres (0.81 km2) land has been allocated in front of the Institute for its further expansion

The institute is accredited by NBA. This is the first government engineering college in the state to have accreditation from NBA because of its academic excellence. The medium of instruction is English. It is affiliated to Biju Patnaik University of Technology(BPUT) and State Council for Technical Education & Vocational Training(SCTE & VT).[1]

History

Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology (IGIT), Sarang was established in the year of 1982 and was managed directly by the Govt. of Odisha in the name of Odisha College of Engineering (OCE). Prior to this, since 1981, the institute in the name of Modern Polytechnic (MPT) was offering Diploma Courses in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Mining Survey Engineering. In the year 1987, both OCE and MPT were merged and renamed as IGIT, Sarang and the management was transferred to an Autonomous Society.

The Institute is fully residential with an integrated campus covering 179 acres of land encompassing hostels, staff quarters and a sprawling playground (Dr. M. P. Mishra memorial stadium) with basketball, volleyball and badminton courts. In addition to this, with the Govt. approval, a proposal has been submitted to District authorities for further alienation of 200 acres of Govt. land in front of the Institute for its further expansion. The institute has central infrastructure facilities like Central Library (with 27,000 volumes of books and 50 current periodicals / journals subscribed every year), Central Computer Centre, Central Workshop,Knowledge Centre, 8 nos. of student hostels having accommodation facility for 1000 students and other amenities such as SBI (Core Bank facilities), Guest house, Hospital, Post Office, Canteen, Students and Employees Co-operative Consumer stores, different clubs, Telephone Exchange, Mobile tower and Schooling up to High School level in its campus.

Undergraduate Courses

The Institute offers 4 year undergraduate B.Tech degree program in the following engineering disciplines :

While in addition to the above courses the institute will start offering full-time undergraduate courses in the following disciplines from the year of 2014 with an intake of 60 each.

It also offers 3 year postgraduate degree program in MCA, M.Tech and 3 years B.Tech degree for diploma holders under lateral entry scheme with the approval of AICTE New Delhi, recognised by Govt.of Odisha and affiliated under Biju Patnaik University of Technology, Rourkela.[2]

The Institute offers two part-time and nine full-time Postgraduate M.Tech courses / Master course Computer Sc.Engg degree program in the following engineering disciplines :

Central Library

The Institute library has a valuable collection of about 27,000 text & reference books, Hand books, I.S. codes. About 50 nos of journals are being subscribed to Institute Library. The library remains open from 9.00 A.M. to 7.00 P.M. on all working days except on Saturday. Saturday timing is from 9 AM to 1.00 PM. On Sunday and other public holidays, it is kept closed.[3]

Residential student halls

The institute was fully residential and used to provide hostel accommodation for all students.Owing to the recent rise in seats the administration took the hostel premises of Adarsha engineering college, Angul on lease for boys not allotted hostel accommodation. In exceptional cases, a student subsequent to admission may be permitted, on application in prescribed form, to remain with his/her parents or natural guardian living in nearby places. Students permitted to stay as day-scholars are exempted from payment of mess charges and Electricity charges only and will be entitled for refund of the mess advanced paid at the time of admission. All other dues will be collected from day scholars also. However, the students not provided with hostels accommodation by the institute will be exempted from all hostel dues except Hostels fund. Accommodation has been arranged in the hostels as scheduled

  5. Aryabhatta Bhawan -All 2nd year B.Tech boys
  6. Bhaskar Bhawan -All 3rd year B.Tech boys
  7. Agni Bhawan -All Diploma Boys students

In addition to these the institute is planning to construct 3 more hostels to cater to the needs of growing student numbers. Students admitted to hostels have to strictly adhere to the hostel rules . [4]

Faculty

The college boasts of a highly trained faculties in each and every specializations. The College is one of the foremost contributors of faculty to national level institutes like NIT Rourkela. Most Professors in NIT Rourkela started their career here. The current faculties are best in their field, who have worked well for the upliftment of the college. The college is famous in the state of Odisha for its departments of Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. Most of the faculties have their educational background traced to IITs' and even foreign universities. The college has so many notable faculties who have got wide acclamation across the state. College Festivals

Apart from several branch related cultural and technical Festivals that are witnessed round the year there are 2 big events witnessed around the months of December–January, IGIT Youth Fiesta and the Techno Cultural Fest, IGIT Horizon.

Horizon is the annual techno cultural fest of Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology, Sarang

IGIT Youth Fiesta

IGIT's Youth Festival, earlier known as "Helios" started way back in 1992.The Cultural Festival is an inter college event with participants from top colleges of the country attending it. The event in its current format consists of 6 primary events among other events:

  2. Unmesh (All India Quiz)
  3. Battle-e-Saltito(Dance Competition)
  4. Debasio(Debate)
  5. Curtain's Call(Drama)
  6. Expresso( India's Got Talent)

The 2015 edition of IGIT Youth Fiesta will feature the 2nd edition of the iconic IMUN, the inaugural edition being held in December 2013.

University Status

The Odisha government is contemplating conferring university status to the institute in order to ensure greater autonomy and flow of more funds.
