Indian Institute of Technology, Palakkad is the upcoming IIT in Palakkad, Kerala. It will start offering courses from next academic year from a temporary campus near Walayar in Palakkad district. The Union Human Resources Ministry has decided to kick off operations of the IIT from the Ahalya Group of Institutions campus. Meanwhile, IIT Madras has been chosen as the mentor institute for the Palakkad IIT. In the beginning, 120 undergraduate students will be enrolled in the Palakkad IIT. The central government will spend Rs 2,200 crore on the IIT in the first stage. Civil, mechanical, electronic and computer science courses will be offered to 120 students at the temporary campus.[1] IIT Madras will be involved in setting up infrastructure, faculty, and ensuring the quality of education at the new institute.[2]

The Union government has issued an order sanctioning an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Palakkad in March 2015.[3] IIT established in Palakkad keeping in view its strategic location in the middle of the State and its proximity to Tamil Nadu’s second largest city, Coimbatore. Palakkad and Shoranur junctions would ensure sufficient rail connectivity.[4] The efforts to get an IIT for Palakkad began when V.S. Achuthanandan was the Chief Minister and there was a sustained campaign since then. Former Union Minister of State for Human Resources Sashi Tharoor and Palakkad MP M.B. Rajesh too took active interest in making it a reality and had initiated the ground works.[5]
