Incidents at Disneyland Resort

This is a summary of notable incidents that have taken place at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California. While the California Department of Safety and Health (CDSH) has ruled that some guest-related incidents are Disney's fault, the majority of incidents were due to negligence on the guests' part.[1]

The term incidents refers to major accidents, injuries, outbreaks of disease, deaths, and significant crimes. While these incidents are required to be reported to regulatory authorities for investigation, attraction-related incidents usually fall into one of the following categories:

According to a 1985 Time magazine article, fewer than 100 lawsuits are filed against Disney each year for numerous incidents.[2]

Resort-wide incidents

Measles outbreak

In 2014 a measles outbreak in the United States originated in Disneyland resulting in 133 cases, 40 of the initial patients were visitors of Disneyland between the 17th and the 20th of December, 2014.[3] The likely patient zero according to the California Department of Public Health would have been an international traveler visiting the park from an area of the globe currently experiencing an outbreak, which can result in "limited domestic transmission of measles."[4] Over 127 cases of measles have been traced to the Disneyland outbreak, spanning 8 states and 2 additional countries (Mexico and Canada) and early scientific analysis has linked the cause of the outbreak to "The anti-vaccine movement and the prevalence of vaccination hesitant parents."[5] Measles had been declared eliminated in the United States in the year 2000 when the rate of occurrence was lower than 1:1,000,000,[6] however 57 of the infected patients were found to be not vaccinated against the measles.[7] This incident renewed intense public discussion of vaccination policies and public health standards in the United States and its public education system.

Prior to the 2014 outbreak, two other outbreaks of measles have been linked to Disneyland, both of them much smaller in scale. In 1982 an outbreak resulted in 14 cases, while an outbreak in 2001 had only 5 cases reported.[8]
