Biography

In`amul Hasan was born on 18 Jumada I 1336 AH (c. 2 March 1918) in the town of Kandhla in present-day Uttar Pradesh, India. He studied at both Kashiful Uloom Nizamuddin and Mazahir Uloom Saharanpur. His teachers included:

His companion in studies was Muhammad Yusuf Kandhlawi. Before they could complete their studies at Mazahir Uloom, they had to return home to Nizamuddin due to Yusuf's illness. They both completed their religious education in Nizamuddin under Maulana Ilyas. In`am and Yusuf also together pledged bay`at (allegiance) to and were khulafa (successors) of Ilyas in the Chishti Sufi tariqah. Yusuf and In`am married the first and second eldest daughters of Maulana Zakariya, respectively. The nikah (marriage ceremony) was conducted by Husain Ahmad Madani at the annual jalsah (gathering) of Mazahir Uloom Saharanpur on 3 Muharram 1354 AH (1935).

Yusuf succeeded his father Ilyas as amir (leader) of the Tablighi Jamaat movement. After Maulana Yusuf's death on 2 April 1965, Maulana Zakariya held consultations with others and then appointed Maulana In`amul Hasan as the third amir. As amir he was referred to by the affectionate title "Hazratji" (Urdu: حضرت جی, Ḥaẓrat Jī).

Maulana In`am also taught Hadith at the madrasah Kashiful Uloom in Nizamuddin, where he served as Mohtamim (administrator).

In`amul Hasan died on 9 May 1995. After his death, the leadership of Tablighi Jamaat was transferred to a shura (council) composed of Izharul Hasan Kandhlawi (d. 1996), In`am's son Zubairul Hasan Kandhlawi (d. 2014), and Muhammad Saad Kandhlawi.
