The Impulse Drum and Bugle Corps is an Open Class (formerly Divisions II & III) competitive junior drum and bugle corps. Based in Buena Park, California, Impulse performs in Drum Corps International (DCI) competitions. Impulse was the 2006 DCI Division III World Champion.[1]
History
Impulse was founded in Anaheim in 1999 with the intent of recapturing the playful, off-beat attitude of such recently departed corps as the Bridgemen and Anaheim's own Velvet Knights. In that vein, the corps adopted a stylized exclamation point as its logo and dressed in bright yellow and black uniforms.
During its inaugural season, Impulse competed only within California. In its second season, the corps traveled to the Pacific Northwest and as far east as Wyoming and Colorado.. In 2001, the corps toured into Illinois, Michigan, across the Canadian border to Ontario, and to its first DCI Division II World Championship prelims at Buffalo, New York, placing 9th of 12 corps.
For the next few seasons, Impulse became a regular visitor to the eastern half of the U.S., attending the Division II Championships at Madison, Wisconsin in 2002 (12th), Orlando, Florida in 2003 (8th), Denver, Colorado in 2004 (6th), and Brockton, Massachusetts in 2005 (6th).
In 2006, the corps, having fewer than 60 members. moved to Division III and won the DCI Division III World Championship at Madison. When, the following year, DCI held its championships in Impulse's home state, the corps not only did not recover its former size, but its performance was not up to the previous years standard, and the defending Division III Champion dropped to a 6th place finish at Pasadena.
Since finishing 18th of 23 corps in the new Open Class at Bloomington, Indiana in 2008, Impulse has remained in California, marching a season of only two to three weeks, while making it known that the corps' intent is to return to national competition.
Sponsorship
The Impulse Drum and Bugle Corps is sponsored by the Impulse Youth Arts Organization, a 501 (c)(3) musical organization that has a Board of Directors, corps director, and staff assigned to carry out the organization's mission. Michael "Mike" Lopez is the President, Executive Director, and corps director .[4]
