Ileret

Ileret (also spelled Illeret) is a village in Marsabit County, Kenya. It is located in Northern Kenya, on the eastern shore of Lake Turkana, north of Sibiloi National Park and near the Ethiopian border. Administratively, Ileret is a part of a ward of the same name, which is part of North Horr Constituency and Marsabit County Council.[1] Illeret is also an administrative location, with a population of 5,045, but the location covers much larger area than the central village.[2]

Numerous hominid fossils have been found near Ileret. 1.5 million old Homo erectus footprints were also found there, the second oldest hominid footprints ever found after those discovered at Laetoli in Tanzania.[3] A field research camp is located in Ileret. Ileret has also an airfield.[4]
