Ignacio Hidalgo de Cisneros y López de Montenegro (11 July 1896, Vitoria - 9 February 1966, Bucarest) was a General of the Spanish Republican Air Force.[1]
Biography
Hidalgo de Cisneros was born in an aristocratic family in Vitoria, the main town in Álava in the Basque Country. Following family tradition he joined the military profession and graduated from the Academia de Intendencia de Ávila in 1914.
In 1932 he married Constancia de la Mora, great-niece of the conservative politician Miguel Maura.[2] He was a major of the Spanish Air Force and before the war he was close to Spanish Socialist politician Indalecio Prieto. In September 1936 he was appointed by Prieto commander of the Spanish Republican Air Force (FARE), after the reorganization of the Air Force.[3] He joined the PCE because of the efficacy of the communist organization he saw in the defense of Madrid.[4] In March 1937 he led the FARE in the Battle of Guadalajara.[5] in December 1938 he travelled to Moscow in order to negotiate a shipment of weapons for the Catalonia offensive of the Spanish Republican Army.[6]
In February 1939, Segismundo Casado asked him to join the plot against Juan Negrin, but he rejected.[7] On March 6 he left Spain with Juan Negrin.[8] After the civil war, he went to exile to Romania and died there in 1966.[9]
