Around the movie

The director A. Jagannathan (B.A.) (26 November 1935, Tirupur - 7 October 2012, Coimbatore) started off as an assistant to T. Prakash Rao (already in MGR 's PADAGOTTI, 1964) and later worked under Pa.Neelakandhan (from 1967, with MGR 's KAAVALKAARAN) and for 12 films, most of them starring MGR.

He made his directorial debut through MANI PAYAL, in 1973.

It was MGR who inaugurated the first show of MANI PAYAL at Chennai's then Midland theatre.

Two years later, it was the MGR film IDHAYAKKANI (under the famous Sathiya Movies production, the sixth and the last one of the series, with MGR) that turned to be the biggest break of his career.

The first ones were, (under the Sathiya Movies production) : (DHEIVA THAAI in July 18th, 1964), (NAAN AANAIYTTAL in February 4th, 1966), (KAAVALKAARAN in September 7th, 1967), (KANNAN EN KADHALAN in April 25th, 1968), (RICKSHAWKARAN in May 29th, 1971) and well - heard (IDHAYAKKANI in August 22nd, 1975).

It was for the great classic singer, "Isaimani" Sirkazhi Govindarajan, the last song of a soundtrack for MGR's movie.

The film is known for political dialogues and songs.
