Ian Paterson

Mr "Ian Paterson" is a surgeon who worked at Good Hope Hospital and Solihull hospitals from 1998 until his suspension in 2011. He is currently suspended by the General Medical Council, and West Midlands Police have also launched a criminal investigation.

He developed a procedure, which became known as a “cleavage sparing mastectomy” by leaving behind tissue for cosmetic reasons during mastectomy operations which increased the risk of cancer recurrence.[1]

He was desctribed as "charismatic and charming" and "much-liked by his patients" but was not regarded as a "team-player" when it came to the care of patients. Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust admitted responsibility for negligence and agreed to pay out compensation of at least £3.2 million. Sir Ian Kennedy, who led a review into what happened, accused managers at the trust of "preferring good news to true news" and that when the trust did decide to take decisive action, it recalled only a handful of women for further investigation - an approach that was "hopelessly flawed".[2]
