I Am the Club Rocker is the second studio album by Romanian recording artist Inna. It was released on September 19, 2011 and produced by Inna's longtime producing team, Play & Win. The album features a new retro sound and was previously known as Powerless, but Inna personally dismissed the rumor with a tweet.[1] With the release of the new record, Inna has encouraged her fans all over the world to affirm themselves as a Club Rocker, launching a special website dedicated to her fans in order to communicate.[2] The album was described by Play & Win as their best record so far and the whole crew wants to see I Am The Club Rocker atop many charts worldwide.[3]

The album's first promotional single was "Sun Is Up", which peaked at number one in Bulgaria, at number two in Romania and France and at number three in Russia. It has also entered the top twenty of the UK Singles Chart, as it debuted at number seventeen and peaked at number fifteen. The second single, "Club Rocker", premiered on May 17, 2011, during her concert at Arenele Romane, Bucharest. It was officially released on May 30, 2011 via Los 40 Principales Radio in Spain. It was a moderate success, only peaking at number forty-two in Romania and at number thirty-two in France. In the Germanic countries the song performed well, peaking at number fourteen on the Austrian Singles Chart and number fifty-five on the German Singles Chart. "Un Momento", released as the third single from the album, peaked at number twelve on the Romanian Top 100 and reached number forty-two on the French Singles Chart. On November 22, 2011, Inna's website confirmed "Endless" as the fourth single taken from "I Am the Club Rocker". The song and its accompanying music video were released on November 25, 2011. On the Romanian Top 100 the song became the second most successful single release from the album after "Sun Is Up", peaking at number five. On April 5, 2012, Inna published the official music video for the fifth single, WOW, which was previously released as a promotional single to support the new opening of the iTunes Store Romania in October 2011 on the one hand and to promote the release of "I Am The Club Rocker!" in September 2011 on the other hand. The song quickly became a radio hit in Romania after its official release, reaching number ten on the Romanian Top 100, while its accompanying music video simultaneously was a big success on Romania's TV music channels.

In order to promote the album, Inna embarked in a tour through Europe, visiting France, Spain, Germany, Turkey and Romania. The tour is referenced in its promotion as INNA en Concert (French for Inna in concert). The Romanian gig called INNA: Live la Arenele Romane gathered the biggest audience for a Romanian act in its home country since 2003. During early fall 2011, Inna was present in a promo tour trough Mexico where it gathered the most numerous crowd at Six Flags México.

The album was first released digitally in Mexico, on August 26, 2011, but it wasn't physically released until September 16, 2011. Since its release, it charted in the Walloon Chart of Belgium at number-fifteen and in the Top 100 Mexico where it debuted weak but following Inna's presence in the country it became the greatest gainer of the week and moved to a new peak of number-eight, becoming Inna's first top ten album there and registering a large increase in units sold, as shown by Asociación Mexicana de Productores de Fonogramas y Videogramas. It was also certified Gold by IFPI in Poland and it performed well in Czech Republic, France and in Inna's homecountry Romania without any official store-release. The album was finally released in Romania and got certified Gold by UPFR and it was named "Album of the Year" by Inna's label Roton Music Romania.[4]

Inna first announced that she would commence work on a new album in June 2010. "Moon Girl" (a track leaked onto the internet on May 23, 2010) and "Sun Is Up" were announced to be featured on the upcoming album. On June 28, Inna posted a video on her YouTube channel containing a teaser of a "Hit Summer Pack" by Play & Win (including two songs featuring Inna: "Sun Is Up" and "Un Momento"). Announced as a single release "Sun Is Up" premiered on Romanian mainstream radio on June 29, 2010 while "Un Momento" later was released on the Spanish Edition of her debut album Hot. On July 10, 2010, during her performance at the MTV Romania Music Awards, held in Craiova, Inna premiered "Sun Is Up".[5] In April 2011, the second single to be taken off the album was unveiled – "Club Rocker". The single premiered on May 17, during Inna's concert in Bucharest.[3]

At first, the album was planned to be entitled Powerless,[6] but Inna personally dismissed this rumor, via Twitter.[1] The official name of the record was announced via Facebook. It was unveiled that it will be titled I Am the Club Rocker, and Inna encourages her fanbase to affirm themselves as CLUB ROCKERS!.[3] A total of almost 3,000 club rockers showed up in less than three days (200 on Twitter and over 2,000 on Facebook).[7] Inna posted on her Facebook wall:

"("I Am the Club Rocker") Is the album that describes me the best. It is made especially for you and together we can make it a number 1!"[3]

"It is very easy to work with an artist such as Inna, because feeling her presence in the studio is always a source of inspiration for us. We thank God for the inspiration, we are sure that this is our best record so far. And, this time we come with new elements in order to improve the sound, and the message is a goad for all those who feel young and always ready for fun. Our expectations are very huge and we hope to outperform ourselves this time."

The record was entirely written and produced by Sebastian Barac, Marcel Botezan and Radu Bolfea (the band Play & Win), in their studios in Bucharest and Constanţa.[9]

The artwork of the album was produced during a photo shoot, which the newspaper Libertatea announced was the most expensive ever to be developed in Romania, with the total costs of over €15,000. It was shot in the Media Pro Pictures studios in Buftea, next to Bucharest. The photo shoot was directed by photographer Eduard Aninaru. Over 50 male and female models were featured in the shooting, which consists of two different images: an uncensored one, leaked onto the internet, and the official artwork of the album "I Am The Club Rocker".[10] In the artwork, Inna stands in the center of a background full of semi-nude male and female models having fun. She wears a summer suit with long boots and a French-like bun.[11]

The album is considered Inna's best and one of the best dance albums a Romanian has ever made yet. It contains twelve distinct song and a bonus remix (a total of thirteen tracks) with five singles released. By the end of 2011, Inna's label named "I Am the Club Rocker" "the Album of The Year".[4]

Release and promotion

The album was released on September 19, 2011 in Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain and Switzerland.[12] as well as on October 11, 2011 in the United States.[13]

In early 2010, Inna premiered two songs ("Señorita" and "No Limit"), one year after the premiere of "July".[14][15] Later that year, Inna premiered another song – "Moon Girl".[16] All these four song became tracks for "I Am the Club Rocker". Inna kept performing "Señorita" during her concerts and performances, using a stripped-down version of "No Limit" as intro.[17] All of the songs received a promotional cover. In the cover for "Señorita" Inna's left side of her face is shown on a blooded-red background.[18] In the cover for "No Limit" Inna, apparently hurt, is fighting with a dinosaur with an X-ray device.[19] In the cover for "July" she appears in bikini with a vintage look later borrowed by Beyoncé Knowles.[20] In the cover for "Moon Girl" Inna is on the top of a car, wearing a futuristic no-top dress and Brasserie.[21]

By the end of 2010, Inna performed a snippet to what was going to be the eighth track of the record — "We're Going In the Club".[22] By then known as "Got Me Goin'" it was predicted that this would be her next single after "Sun Is Up" but the rumor was dismissed. Inna performed the song to all her gigs from November 2010 to March 2011 in a guitar-driven semi-a capella manner, introducing the lines "You got me goin',/I got the feeling that tonight we'll catch the morning/When I'll have you by my side/I'm filled with loving/You turn me up/You take me down/You got me goin' (...)".[23]

Prior to the album's release, Inna released some other tracks off the album. On September 3, Inna uploaded an internet video to "Put Your Hands Up" on to her YouTube account and via Facebook, as the first full-length preview tracks leaked upon the album's release.[24] The video puts together clips of Inna performing for different crowds, for example in France, the United Kingdom or Romania.[25]

On September 5, Inna uploaded an internet video to "Endless" on to her YouTube account and via Facebook, as the second full-length preview tracks leaked prior the album's release.[26] "House is Going On" was the last track to be unveiled.[27]

Singles
"Sun Is Up"
The first song to be released off the album was "Sun Is Up" which became a top-three hit in countries like France, Romania or Switzerland.

"Sun is Up" was the first single to be taken from "I Am The Club Rocker". It received overwhelming success, reaching number one on the Bulgarian Airplay Chart and number two on the Romanian Top 100.[28] The song also became one of her most successful songs internationally, peaking at number two in the French Singles Chart and at number three both on the Swiss Singles Chart and the Russian Airplay Chart.[29] In France, though, it was released as a single from the re-edition of her debut album "Hot". In the UK, it was released as the fifth and lead single from "Hot", a month before the album release. An accompanying music video for "Sun Is Up" was shot in Spain and it was directed by Alex Herron.

"Club Rocker" was released as the second single from the album. It was firstly performed by Inna on May 17, 2011 during her gig in Bucharest. The song was officially released on May 30, 2011. On the same date it was sent to Spanish radio station Los 40 Principales and was available on French iTunes. A remix of the song, which was released on June 20, 2011, features U.S. rapper Flo Rida. The music video's production started in early March and was finished in May 2011. It premiered on Inna's official YouTube Account on June 27, 2011.[30] "Club Rocker" only became a moderate chart success, peaking at number forty-two on the Romanian Top 100 and at number thirty-two on the French Singles Chart. It was also a hit in Denmark and in the Netherlands.[31][32][33]

"Un Momento", a collaboration with Spanish DJ, remix artist and producer Juan Magan, was already available as a bonustrack on the Spanish Edition of Inna's debut album Hot, which was released on September 28, 2010. In 2011, "Un Momento" was released as a remastered version and became part of the tracklist of her second album I Am The Club Rocker!.[34][35] On July 19, 2011, it was digitally released in France as the third single from the album.[36] After the release of the music video on August 10, 2011, "Un Momento" entered the Romanian Top 100, peaking at number twelve on November 6, 2011.[37]

"Endless" was well received by the audience. Hence, it debuted at number-six in both the Digital and the Dance chart.[38] It was released as the fourth single from the album on November 25, 2011.[39] The music video comes to support an anti-domestic violence campaign.[40] It shows Inna being abused by her boyfriend with whom she is finally breaks up. The song quickly entered the Romanian Top 100, debuting at number ninety-four on December 11, 2011. It reached number five, becoming Innas sixth top ten single.[37]

"WOW" was released as a promotional single single in Romania exclusively in order to promote the brand new opening of iTunes Store Romania.[27] It was unlocked on September 4, 2011 for a limited period towards September 6 and it was then removed and finally re-uploaded once with the album's release.[27] A cover for the track was shot in late September on a Romanian beach at the Black Sea shore.[41] The song entered the Romanian Digital Chart at number-one, selling 1,012 copies within a week.[42] On January 22, 2012, Inna announced via Twitter, that "WOW" will be the fifth official single release from the album, and posted a picture from the set of the video shot. On April 5, 2012 an official music video was released on Inna's YouTube account.[43] The song debuted on the Romanian Top 100 on April 22, 2012 at number seventy-seven and peaked at number ten, becoming Inna's seventh top ten single on the chart.[37]

Other charted songs

"Put Your Hands Up" received an internet-only video featuring Inna's alumni moments from her tour. It debuted at number seventy-one on the Digital Chart thus peaking at number-sixteen in the Dance Chart.[44]

In order to promote the new material coming up, Inna embarked in a European tour which commenced in France on February 18 and hit Germany, Spain, Turkey and Romania, for the first time in a major venue.[45][46] The concert tour is entitled INNA en Concert.[47] In late April, Inna asked her fans on Facebook and Twitter where should she go in her previous tour, mentioning Mexico as a place of interest.[48] As a part of the promo tour, Inna premiered INNA: Live la Arenele Romane, a 45-minutes live concert held in Bucharest, Romania.[49] There she performed three songs off "I am the Club Rocker" plus various covers after other artists like Lady Gaga or Bruno Mars and managed to gather over 5,000 people in the audience.[50] After touring all Europe, Inna reached a new territory she never been to before: United Kingdom.[51] Inna performed at many dates in the UK, including during the Party in the Park festival in Leeds and at the G-A-Y nightclub in London.[52][53] In late summer she continued her European tour with more gigs added, including in Germany or in Spain. In September, Inna toured Mexico and appeared in many interviews and Radio coverages. Most notably, during the Six Flags performance she made more than 10,000 people sing along with her most of her songs.[54] After her presence in Mexico, the album moved 40 positions higher in the Mexican Albums Chart, hitting the top ten and peaking at number-eight.[55] The tour concluded in late November, 2011 when Inna performed at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy during Starfloor 2011.[56]

In early 2012, Inna wil commence her second world tour and the second tour that promotes the album. Inna tweeted herself that the tour is named "I Am the Club Rocker Tour after the supporting album. The tour kicked off in Belgrade, Serbia on 13 January 2012.[57] The tour will also hit the United States in the first half of 2012.[58]

Another live performance of the song will be taking place in the artist's first North American tour, set to begin in April of 2012.

Reception

Commercial reception

I Am The Club Rocker became a huge commercial success in Mexico. On September 26, 2011, it debuted on the Mexican Albums Chart at number fifty-three and climbed up forty-five positions to number eight on the following week, due to Inna's presence in the country for a short promotional tour.[55] It outperformed Hot, which peaked at number fifty-four in March 2011. The following weeks it moved up and down within the top forty.[59] In Poland, the album was certified Gold by the IFPI.[60] In Belgium, the album entered the top twenty of the Walloon Chart peaking at number-twelve.[61] "I Am the Club Rocker" also entered the top forty of the French Albums Chart, but at a lower position than "Hot"'s opening spot at number nine. It only managed to open at a decent number twenty-three and lasted for a few other weeks within the top 100 before falling towards the bottom 50 positions and then completely exiting the chart.[62] The album also entered the Czech Albums Chart at number-twelve, five positions lower than the previous Hot.[63] It was also Inna's first top-twenty album in Japan, where it has peaked at number-seventeen. In Romaniam, the album debuted at number three, behind Adele's 21 and Lady Gaga's Born This Way. The next week, it has dropped out of the top ten and if has left the chart after its seventh week. It has sold 9,000 copies in 2011 and as of October, 2012 the album has surpassed the 10,000 mark, thus being certified Gold by the Uniunea Producătorilor de Fonograme din România. The album's chart performance and sales unit were ultimately underwhelming for Inna and her record label. As of September, 2012 the album has only sold 150,000 units worldwide in over a year after its initial release, making it a commercial flop.

Accolades

In December 2011, Inna's label — Roton Music Romania named the album I Am the Club Rocker "Romanian Album of the Year" and added it to their list of "Best Albums of the Year 2011" along with "Wounded Rhymes" by Lykke Li and "Christmas" by Michael Bublé.[4]

Along with this recognition, the album's tracks and adjacent materials received numerous nominations at important music awards, including two wins. The song "Sun Is Up" received the Eurodanceweb Award for "Song of The Year" in December, 2010.[64] The song received another important accolade when it was named "Best Song in the Balkans" during the 2011 Balkan Music Awards.[65] It also received two nominations. The first one came once with the RRA Awards 2011 when Inna was nominated in the category "Pop/Dance Song of the Year", but lost to "Playing with Fire" by Paula Seling featuring Ovidiu Cernăuțeanu.[66] Also, it was nominated for "Best Dance" during the 9th Romanian Music Awards, held September, 2011, along with "Mr. Saxobeat" by Alexandra Stan, but lost to Play & Win's "Ya BB".[67] The music video for "Club Rocker" also received a nomination during the 9th Romanian Music Awards for "Best Video", but lost to Andreea Bănică's "Sexy".[67]
