9 Corps (not IX Corps), also known as Rising Star Corps, was raised in 2005 and is the Indian Army's youngest corps[1] It is based at Yol cantonment in Kangra Valley, 10 kilometres (6 mi) southeast of Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh. It was raised on 1 September 2005 by splitting the southern formations of Nagrota-based XVI ‘White Knight’ Corps of the Udhampur-based Northern Command.[2] It is a part of Army’s Chandimandir-based Western Command.[3] Its correct name is written as 9 Corps and not IX Corps.
The corps is headed by Lieutenant General Anil Bhalla [4] who has been transferred as DG Military Operations in January 2012.
It consists of:[5]
- 26th Infantry Division headquartered at Jammu
- 29th Infantry Division headquartered at Pathankot
- 2 Independent Armored Brigade (former 252nd Indian Armoured Brigade)[6]
- 3 Independent Armored Brigade
- 16 Independent Armored Brigade (Dec 1971 placed under 54th Inf Div)[6]
