International Management Institute (IMI) Kolkata, was established in 2010 and has already earned a solid reputation for quality management education. IMI carries the mantle of being the country's first corporate-sponsored B-school.[4] The first batch of students who joined IMI Kolkata in 2011 graduated in 2013 after having completed their two-year Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) programme.[5] Following a very successful campus placement, all the students were recruited by some of India’s best known companies, including Hindustan Unilever, KPMG, PricewaterhouseCoopers, CESC Limited, ICICI Bank, Berger Paints India, YES Bank, ITC Limited, HCL Technologies, Genpact, Eveready Industries India, Firstsource, IMRB International and many more.[6]

IMI Kolkata aims at shaping brilliant minds, equipping them with the skills to lead national and global organizations. The Institute is devoted to the task of building a pool of next-generation entrepreneurs, managers and leaders with unwavering commitment to ethical behaviour and unfaltering concern for the conservation of natural resources and the environment.

History

The first IMI business school campus was set up in Delhi in 1981. It was in 2010 that this RP-SG Group[7] [8] [9] B-school decided to start two new IMI campuses in Kolkata and Bhubaneswar. Consequently, IMI Kolkata was set up with the dual goal of imparting quality management education alongside the mission of creating a think tank in eastern India with the city of joy as its base.[10]

International Collaborations

In 2014, IAE-Tours, a prestigious public university in France, accepted IMI Kolkata’s PGDM course curriculum based on its primary assessments. As part of this collaboration, IMI-Kolkata’s top 5-7 students (in the area of marketing) will have the opportunity to attend classes in Tours for a month. Tours’ teachers will also take classes in Kolkata. On qualifying, the students will be awarded a dual MBA certification: An MSc/MBA in Business Administration from Tours and a PGDM from IMI Kolkata.

IMI Kolkata has also been collaborating with the CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants), UK, for research focused on exploring linkages between Corporate Social Responsibility and firm performance. The institute has also entered into an agreement with Oxford Institute of Retail Management, University of Oxford for joint retail research.[11] The research programme would aim to influence public policy decision makers on retail development issues and retail practitioners through data-driven retail and consumer-related research outputs among others.[12]

Academics

IMI-Kolkata offers the following full-time academic programmes:

Students are selected from all over India based on their CAT (Common Admission Test) score.[13] The institute has also applied for permission to offer an FPM (Fellow Programme in Management) programme.

Facilities

The IMI Kolkata campus is centrally located in the city and has state-of-the-art infrastructural, academic and residential facilities. The institute offers not only a scholarly and professional ambiance, but also a fulfilling campus life necessary for all-round development of a student.

It is an institute that has achieved international standards not only by providing state of art facilities but also by having an architectural expression which represents that. The campus buildings are separated into an academic block and a residential block. Designed and developed by Abin Design Studio,[14] the Building IMI, Kolkata is inspired by nature.[15][16] The sky with its various states and ever changing colors is one of the most dynamic elements of nature and this is what has inspired the built form facade. The colored laminate with Vanceva PVB glass on the facade follows no repetitive pattern and is symbolic of the unpredictable nature of the sky. It also represents the vibrancy of today’s youth.

The academic block is centrally air-conditioned with spacious lecture theaters, equipped with the latest audio-visual teaching aids and wireless laptops for students to access the IMI Kolkata intranet. The residential block houses single-occupancy hostel rooms for students.

Research & Consulting

The Institute’s faculty members are working on a project on water[17] and sanitation, which is funded by South Asia Network of Economic Research Institutes, through a World Bank sub-grant. The project is managed by Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies.[18][19] The Institute’s faculty has been working on a project on energy/water nexus that is funded by USAID (United States Agency for International Development) and managed by Tetratech ES. The faculty has worked on a project on Energy Environment Linkages. The project is funded by UNEP-RISOE Centre (United Nations Environment Programme) through Denmark Technical University (DTU).
