Hurlingham is an Argentine city, capital of the Hurlingham Partido in the province of Buenos Aires. It is located in the west of Greater Buenos Aires.

History

With a long history of nearly 140 years based on the contribution of British, German, Italian and Spaniard colonies, was created with the gestation of Hurlingham Club that led to the village.

The municipality was created by the provincial Law No. 11,610 in December 1994 and functions as a municipality since 1995. The town, located in the central-east of the province, is known for its green spaces (golf research INTA, boundaries to Camino del Buen Ayre. In addition, the game is also known for being the youngest of the Province of Buenos Aires.

Location

The city is located in the Greater Buenos Aires, approximately 20 km of the Buenos Aires.

Bordered on the south by William C. Morris, Buenos Aires, on the west by the Ituzaingó Partido, on the north by the Villa Tesei and this with the Tres de Febrero Partido.

Origin of name

The Hurlingham Club was founded in 1888 by the English community in the area, following the original Hurlingham Club, founded in Fulham (United Kingdom). According to the history of the Hurlingham Club, the name was inherited from the Hurlingham House, home of the club was founded, originally built by Dr. William Cadogan in 1760.

The word "ham" in Old English meant "house" may have been related to the name referring to "The House of Hurling", an ancient Irish sport. However, this has not been confirmed by staff of the Hurlingham Club in Fulham, who know the origin of the name.

Sports

The town has three rugby clubs: Curupaity, Hurling Club and El Retiro. All are associated with the Unión de Rugby de Buenos Aires. The Hurlingham Club is a centre for British sports, including cricket, golf and lawn tennis (having some of the very few Grass courts in Latin America). The club is also home to Polo and is one of the foremost clubs in Argentina and the world.

Music

The city has been the birthplace of some of the main rock bands of the country such as Sumo, Divididos, Las Pelotas and Gangrena.
