Interior renovation round
- Every team must completely renovate their zone in the homes of fellow teams around Australia. There are six renovations in total however teams will only complete five of them as they do not watch or assist with the renovation of their own home. For each renovation, teams are given a strict timeframe of only 7 days.
- Each house is divided into five zones, based on rooms and house setting. Each team focuses on a zone each. Some houses may include an external zone, while others may have a multi-storey layout.
- Teams who win the previous renovation are able to choose their zone at the next renovation. Teams who score the lowest in the previous round, must camp out in a tent throughout the renovation. In the case where the next house to be renovated belongs to the previous winner or loser, there are some variations made to this rule.
- Teams are permitted to contact professional contractors and tradesmen for additional renovation needs, in addition to consulting the House Rules experts.
- Teams must keep to a set budget. This includes payments for construction tradesmen, materials and furnishings.
- A set of five 'House Rules' is set by the owners, which the teams can choose to follow, break or manipulate. These generally outline the styles, colours or specific detail the owners wish to have in their home
- All teams are scored out of 10 by judges and the home-owners at the end of each week. This totals a highest possible week score of 30.
- The team with the lowest overall combined score would be eliminated.
Judges
At the end of each renovation, the judges review every zone in the house and score each team out of 10 for their efforts. From series 2, judges verdicts were delivered face to face in front of the contestants.
The judges are:
- Wendy Moore (Editor of 'Home Beautiful' magazine)
- Joe Snell (Architect)
Experts
The role of the experts is to assist and guide the contestants throughout each renovation. They need to make sure the house construction and design flows and also settle any disputes between teams.
The current experts are:
- Carolyn Burns-McCrave (Interior Designer)
- Chester Drife (Build Supervisor)
