Hospital school
A hospital school is a school operated in a hospital, generally a children's hospital which provides instruction to all primary and secondary grade levels. These schools help children regain academic progress during periods of hospitalization or rehabilitation. The schools are most often accredited and run by the local public school system, funded by the state, and are based on the same curriculum and testing mandated by the state as is practical for the students. Enrollments are low when compared to traditional schools and teachers must provide instruction for many grade levels.[1]
The LeHo Project (Learning at Home and in the Hospital), is an international 3-year project funded by the European Union, and managed by the Politecnico di Milano aiming to research, develop and disseminate effective pedagogical practices and appropriate use of ICT within the Hospital School Sector. http://www.lehoproject.eu/
The aims of this project are to: Outline key educational factors and good practices needed by students who are ill. Explore and design ICT-based solutions which will enable children in hospital, receiving home therapy, or who attend school part-time due to illness, to access education. Demonstrate how technology can impact on the methodology and pedagogy in Home and Hospital Education (HHE).
The initiatives adopted in the HHE are designed to be innovative and applied within a broad range of didactical contexts to improve the quality of student educational experience and outcomes.
The core partnership of experienced partners from research, HE and SE, including EDEN with its 200 members, will work closely with a wider network of more than 20 associate partners, including Hospital and mainstream schools, governmental departments and other related networks, providing scope for far reaching impact in terms of the education and use of ICT for students with medical needs.
