The Hospital of St Lawrence, Bodmin is a disused hospital in Bodmin, Cornwall, built in 1906, and currently threatened with demolition.

Origins

Silvanus Trevail, architect (1851-1903)

The Hospital of St Lawrence, Bodmin was designed in 1901 by Silvanus Trevail (1851–1903), one of Cornwall's best-known architects.[1] The building was not completed until 1906,[2] three years after the architect's death. Described by Trevail's biographer as "one of his finest achievements",[1] it was built in the Edwardian Baroque style.[1]

Closure

The hospital closed in 2002 and has been disused since that time.[1]

Threat of demolition

The former hospital's owners, Community First Cornwall, intend to demolish the buildings in order to clear the site.[1] Despite local support for its preservation, English Heritage declined a request to list the building.[1][2] In May 2013 Cornwall Council decided that the demolition of the building did not require an environmental impact assessment, removing one of the last remaining obstacles to its removal.[1] The Foster Hall Revival Trust began a campaign aimed at preserving the building and proposing alternatives to demolition.[3] Demolition started in September 2013 and is due to be completed by May 2014[4]
