Honneur et Fidélité
Honneur et Fidélité ("Honour and Fidelity") is the motto of the French Légion étrangère. It has been inscribed on its flags from 1844, instead of the usual Honneur et Patrie ("honour and fatherland") of the flags of other Army units of the French Republic.
This motto was written on the baneers of units of Swiss mercenaries, notably the Diesbach regiment which fought for France during the Ancien Régime, and inherited by the Foreign Legion by way of the 85th régiment d'infanterie de ligne.
