Hong Kong Design Centre

Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC) is a publicly funded, non-profit organisation, funded by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government to help Hong Kong become a centre for design excellence.

Background

HKDC was established in 2002 with the support of the design industry. HKDC's mission is to use design and innovation to drive value creation and improve the well-being of society, while the vision is to establish Hong Kong as a centre of design excellence in Asia. Design for Society is a major undertaking of Hong Kong Design Centre in

  1. promoting and celebrating design excellence,
  2. championing strategic and wider use of design for creating business added value and community benefits; and
  3. educating the professions and the community to be resourceful and champions for sustained developments through design and innovation.

The long-term success of HKDC requires continued feedback and unfailing support from the community and different professions across various design fields, education, commercial, voluntary and public sectors.

HKDC organises regular seminars, workshops, exhibitions and conferences including the Business of Design Week (BODW) which is an annual week-long event organised every December, with the purpose of promoting the awareness of the value of design and also the Knowledge of Design Week (KODW) providing sophisticated design programme manifesting latest global trends in innovation research and translating in-depth analysis into practical design knowledge.

The HKDC also gives out awards each year known as the “HKDC Awards” to encourage good design in the Asia region.

Institute of Design Knowledge (IDK) is an executive education provider managed by HKDC. It facilitates the transfer of highly advanced design knowledge relevant to innovation and design management.

HKDC Awards

The HKDC Awards are annual awards organised by the Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC), given to companies and individuals to promote design excellence. The awards consist of four categories:

Design for Asia (DFA) Award

DFA Award is presented to companies from around the world that have generated business success through good design that have an impact on Asia. The categories include:

Design for Leadership (DLA) Award

The DLA Award is presented to individuals that have developed and applied design to achieve exceptional business success. Past awardees:

World's Outstanding Chinese Designer (WOCD)

The WOCD recognises Chinese individuals that can act as role models to inspire young Chinese designers.

Past Winners:

Young Design Talent Awards (YDTA)

The YDTA is designed to recognise and identify local young design practitioners and students. Winners of the awards will receive training or work placement at reputable design organisations to broaden their horizons.
