The Honda Brio is a five-door subcompact hatchback produced by Honda in India, Thailand and Indonesia. The car was introduced in 2011.

Name

The name Brio means energetic and cheerful in Italian.[5] In Indonesia, Brio has an additional Indonesian name for the LCGC rule. The name Satya (Sanskrit: true, genuine, sincere or faithful) is used, with both names combined as Honda Prospect Motor Brio Satya as its official LCGC name.

History

The Brio prototype was first shown at 2010 Thailand International Motor Show. The car is developed to position in a class below Honda Fit for emerging markets. The initial markets were Thailand and India. The Brio's market expanded when it was launched in South Africa in December 2012.[6]

The Brio is powered by a 4-cylinder, 1.2 L (73 cu in) L12B i-VTEC gasoline engine delivering 88 PS (64.7 kW; 86.8 bhp). It is available with either a 5-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission.[7] The car is certified to deliver a combined mileage of 19.4 km/L (55 mpg-imp; 46 mpg-US)16.5 km/L (47 mpg-imp; 39 mpg-US) with manual and automatic transmission respectively on the Indian cycle.[8]

Safety equipment includes dual front airbags, anti-lock braking system, electronic brakeforce distribution and front pretensioner seat belts. The driver's side airbag feature multi-stage inflation. The front body is designed to absorb impact energy for better pedestrian protection.[5]

Production

The Brio is produced in Thailand for the Southeast Asian market.

In India, the Brio is assembled for the South Asian market by the company's subsidiary, Honda Siel Cars India (HSCI), at its production facilities in Greater Noida with four variants. Over 80% of its parts are sourced from Indian suppliers. The Rajasthan factory also exports Brio parts to Thailand.[9]

Honda has started the assembly of Brio in Indonesia in 2013 to fulfil the local demand.[10] As for 2014, Brio for Indonesia market has 3 models : Brio 1.2l, Brio Satya and Brio Sports 1.3l (Completely Built Up from Thailand while others Completely Knock Down products). The Brio 1.2l consists of 3 trims : A (with 5 speed manual transmission only), S and E (with 5 speed automatic transmission option); Satya also has same trims but available with manual transmission only while Sports 1.3l has only one trim with manual or automatic transmission option.[11]

Sales

In Thailand, the Brio was launched in March 2011.[12] In Indonesia, the Brio was launched in August 2012, with the price between Rp 149,000,000 and Rp 170,000,000. In Indonesia (before LCGC programme was launched), the Brio uses a 1.3 L (79 cu in) L13Z i-VTEC instead of 1.2 L (73 cu in) L12B i-VTEC.[13]

The Brio's planned launch in India was delayed from early 2011 due to the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami. It was finally launched in September 2011, just ahead of the festive season, with a starting price of 395,000. It joined the Jazz in Honda's hatchback subcompact range for India. In the Indian market, it competes against Maruti Suzuki's Swift and Ritz, Hyundai's i10, Ford's Figo, Nissan's Micra and Toyota's Etios Liva.[9]

The sales took a hit again when Honda's Thailand plant had to shut down due to the massive Bangkok floods. Critical components for the Brio come from Thailand and hence its Indian production stopped for more than a month, resuming only on the February 15th, 2012.[14][15]

The Brio was launched in the Philippines at the Philippine International Motor Show on September 18–21, 2014.[2]

In Indonesia, city cars is dominated by Low Cost Green Car (LCGC) which have price about Rp 100 million or less, Honda Brio is set at sixth and for 10 months in 2014 sold 9,853 units, while the LCGC Honda Brio Satya is set at third with 21,959 sale units. The other non-LCGC city cars are behind Honda Brio.[16]

The Mobilio Prototype, Honda’s first low cost MPV that will be sold throughout Asia was premiered at the 21st Indonesia International Motor Show. This is also the first model from Honda developed for the Indonesian market. The Mobilio is 4,390 millimetres (173 in) long, 1,680 millimetres (66 in) wide, 1,610 millimetres (63 in) tall with a wheelbase measuring 2,650 millimetres (104 in) long. It has a ground clearance of 185 millimetres (7.3 in) and its 1.5 L (92 cu in) petrol engine is the most powerful in its class. The design concept of the Mobilio is “Dual Solid Motion” that “combines a strong stance and expresses strength with dynamic feeling.” The car is recognizable from the front as a cousin to the Brio through its leaf-shaped headlamps and single slab chrome grille. The side profile is accentuated by a “lightning-bolt beltline” while the rear features a high-mounted 6-LED stoplamp. The show car, which is represents almost 100% of the production car, is mounted on 15 inches (380 mm) aluminium-alloy rims.

Recall

On May 5, 2014, Honda issued a recall of about 32,000 Brio and Amaze cars in India due to a possible misassembly of the proportioning valve. This recall is limited to models which are not fitted with ABS[17]
