Homunculus (ホムンクルス Homunkurusu) is a Japanese manga by Hideo Yamamoto, intended for the seinen audience. It is serialized in the magazine Big Comic Spirits. The first volume was released by Shogakukan on July 30, 2003,[1] the last volume on April 28, 2011.[2]

Plot

Trepanation is the procedure of drilling a hole in the skull. It is said to increase the blood circulation and improve pressure inside the skull. It is also said to bring out a person's sixth sense, the ability to use ESP, see ghosts, move objects with one's mind. This is speculative fiction based on the concept of trepanation.

The protagonist of the manga, Nakoshi Susumu, lives in his own car in front of a park inhabited by hobos. During the day, he drives around the city and in the evening dinner with the hobos, bringing drink to them. The hobos refer to him as an "homeless with a suit" due to he always as well dressed and, even living among them, did not look like them.

One day, an eccentric medical student named Manabu Ito offers a good amount of money to Nakoshi go into a trepanation surgery, in order to test the myths about supernatural powers that it would entail. With his car towed, Nakoshi eventually accepts serve as a "subject" in this experiment.

After surgery, Nakoshi starts to suffer hallucinations representing the traumas and insecurities of people around him.
