Hinton House
Hinton House is a large country house near Hinton St George in Somerset, England.
History
The house started life as a medieval hall which was rebuilt circa 1500 by Sir Amias Paulet.[1] Alterations were made by Matthew Brettingham, John Soane, James Wyatt and Jeffry Wyattville for successive Lords Poulett.[2] The Tower House was added around 1814.[3]
The south front was based on Inigo Jones's Banqueting House in Whitehall.[2] The South Range is Grade II* listed.[4]
The former stable block which was built in the late 18th century by John Soane is a Grade II listed building.[5]
Immediately south of the main house is a sunken garden surrounded by low open balustrading.[6]
During World War II the house was used by St Felix School for Girls in Felixstowe.[7] The estate was dissolved in August 1968 following its sale by the childless 8th and last Earl Poulett and the house itself broken up into luxury flats.[2]
