Hinnavaru (Dhivehi: ހިންނަވަރު) is one of the inhabited islands of Lhaviyani Atoll.

Hinnavaru is North of the capital Male'. It has a population of more than 4000 people. There are around 715 houses registered but people live in only around 480 houses.

Population

Registered population as of June 2012 is 4,676 (2404 male and 2272 female).

As per the census of 2006, Hinnavaru has a population of 3,017 (1358 male and 1359 female). Island has a Literacy Rate of 96.48%. The population of the Island has declined by 1.04% when compared to the 2000 census.

Hinnavaru is the second most populous island in the Lhaviyani Atoll.

Economy

Youth (age 15-20) Unemployment rate as of 2006 was at 35%. It is hoped that the rate will be low when the statictics for Census 2014 is collected.

Communication

Communication services available are good in Hinnavaru. Both Wataniya and Dhiraagu services are available at a good quality. 94% of the population uses communication services. A large portion of the population uses internet service.

Reclamation

Reclamation of land in Hinnavaru was a drastic change in Hinnavaru. The project was carried out by Boskalis International B.V ING.

Utilities

Harbour

As a help from Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) after the Tsunami a project was carried out in 2 stages. After the second stage the harbour was inaugurated on 30/11/2010.

Electricity

Electricity is provided to the Island by State Electrical Company (STELCO).

Sewerage System

A sewarage system was installed by the Government of Maldives and established on 31/01/2011. It was built under Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED).
