Himachal Som

Himachal Som (born in West Bengal) was an Indian Foreign Service officer of 1970 Cadre and retired as the Indian Ambassador to Italy and the Permanent Representative to various United Nations bodies in Europe.

He loved cooking and said that it is a 'Great Diplomatic Tool'![1]

He died on 26th November 2013.[2]

Education

He went to St. Patrick's School, Asansol, Asansol and Presidency College, Kolkata. After being selected for the IFS Cadre he did his training from .

Personal life

Som was married to Reba Som, an academic, historian, writer and classical singer from India. She is the director of Indian Council for Cultural Relations' Rabindranath Tagore Centre in Kolkata. She is also a trained singer of Rabindrasangeet. Her compact disc, Selected Songs of Rabindranath Tagore (III Millenneo, Rome, Italy 2003 and Saregama – India, May 2004) includes her English translations and transliteration of Tagore’s lyrics.

Som had two sons, Vishnu Som, one of India's leading television journalist and news anchor and Abhishek Som, a former New York based investment banker who has now opened his own investment banking concern in Delhi.[3]
