Hilton Head Airport (IATA: HHH, ICAO: KHXD, FAA LID: HXD) is a public use airport located on Hilton Head Island, in Beaufort County, South Carolina, United States.[1] Also known as Hilton Head Island Airport,[2] it is owned by Beaufort County.[1] Mostly used for general aviation, it is also served by a commercial airline and one public charter airline operating limited service. It is the only airport on Hilton Head Island.
This airport is included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015, which categorized it as a primary commercial service airport.[3] As per Federal Aviation Administration records, the airport had 79,912 passenger boardings (enplanements) in calendar year 2008,[4] 66,893 enplanements in 2009, and 73,776 in 2010.[5]
Although many U.S. airports use the same three-letter location identifier for the FAA and IATA, this airport is assigned HXD by the FAA[1] and HHH by the IATA.[6][7] The IATA code HHH is used for commercial airline booking purposes.
History
Hilton Head Island has been known for championship golf courses for decades. In the 1960s, it was decided that an airport would facilitate an increase in the number of visitors to the island. Hilton Head Airport opened in 1967 with the help of professional golfer Arnold Palmer. An avid pilot, he also became the first person to land at HXD.[8]
In the past the airport was service by the following airlines:
- ? - 1994: American Eagle Airlines with service to Raleigh-Durham (operated with ATR 42/72)
- March 1, 1998 - ?: Continental Connection (Colgan Air) with service to Atlanta, operated with Beech 1900 aircraft
- March 17, 2007 - November 30, 2008: Delta Connection (Atlantic Southeast Airlines) with service to Atlanta, operated with ATR 72 aircraft
- March 4, 2010 - November 1, 2010: Delta Connection (Mesaba Airlines) with service to Atlanta, operated with Saab 340 aircraft
