Hill's Tavern is a historic building in Scenery Hill, Pennsylvania. For a period in the early 1900s, the inn was known as Central Hotel.[3] Now called the Century Inn, it is the oldest tavern in continuous use on the National Road.[3][4] The overnight facilities can accommodate 23 overnight guests and the dining room can seat up to 140 guests.[4] The outdoor gazebo offers additional seating during the warmer months.[4] It hosted two American Presidents, Andrew Jackson and James K. Polk, the Marquis de LaFayette, Henry Clay, and Mexican General Santa Anna.[4]
The tavern was built by Stephen and Thomas Hill, the founders of Hillsborough (now Scenery Hill, Pennsylvania).[3] The tavern was opened by Stephen Hill in 1794 and served as an important stop along the National Road.[2]
The two and a half-story tavern was built with dressed stone in the Post Colonial vernacular with Georgian influences.[3] Later modifications added Greek Revival and Italianate components.[3] The full five-bay covered porch uses rounded columns.[3] There is a long stone rear wing that houses the original kitchen, completed with a large craned cooking fireplace.[3]
In 1952, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission installed a historical marker noting the historic importance of the tavern.[2] It is designated as a historic public landmark by the Washington County History & Landmarks Foundation.[3]
