The school initially opened May the 20th 1940 as an Infant /Junior school and senior 14 year age group but was latter changed to a senior and Senior High School with a smaller In fact/ Junior school being built next door named Handsworth Primary School. Both schools stand on the Handsworth Avenue in Highams Park E4.

- Sidney Burnell, Director of Education in 1920 and the former name of the school (Sidney Burnell School);
- Elizabeth Payling, an outstanding academic ex-student who is the Head of Regulation Programme Management at Royal Mail ;
- Terry Gibson, an ex-pupil, professional footballer and Sky TV commentator;
- Epping Forest, a nearby forest.
