The Hexham and Allendale Railway was a railway company formed in 1865. It built a short line in Northumberland, England from Allendale to Hexham, and this opened to passengers in 1869. The company was purchased by the North Eastern Railway in 1876, became part of the London and North Eastern Railway in 1921 and part of British Railways in 1948. The line closed to passengers in 1930 and completely in 1950.

History

The Hexham and Allendale Railway obtained its Act of Parliament on 19 June 1865 and the North Eastern Railway purchased shares worth £10,000. The 12 14-mile (19.7 km)[1] branch to Allendale left the former Newcastle and Carlisle Railway line at Hexham.[2]

The line opened to goods and mineral traffic between Hexham to Langley on 19 August 1868 and to Catton Road (later Allendale) on 13 January 1868. In financial difficulty, opening to passenger traffic was delayed until 1 March 1869.[1] The railway was purchased by the North Eastern Railway on 13 July 1876, with each £10 share being bought for £6.[2]

As a result of the Railways Act 1921, on 1 January 1923 the North Eastern Railway became part of the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER). The line was closed to passengers on 22 September 1930. Britain's railways were nationalised on 1 January 1948 and the former Hexham and Allendale Railway line was placed under the control of British Railways. The line closed completely in November 1950.[3][4]
