Heris (Persian: هريس; also Romanized as Herīs and Harīs; also known as Hiriz)[1] is a city in and the capital of Heris County, East Azerbaijan Province, Iran. At the 2006 census, its population was 9,513, in 2,359 families.[2]

Heris is the center of one of the weaving areas in the Iranian part of Azerbaijan, and gave its name to Heriz rugs.

Carpets

Main article: Heriz rug

Carpets from the town's workshops are considered to be of better quality than those from the inaccessible mountain villages. The typical Heris red colour and a highly individual medallion are the main characteristics of these popular carpets. Old and antique examples, in various blue tones, are occasionally found in the trade and at auctions. Brown, beige and turquoise shades indicate older pieces. Heris silk carpets are exceptionally finely knotted and are both rare and very beautiful. The designs of old Heris rugs differ radically from those of new pieces.
