Henry Carlton Cumberbatch (8 December 1900 - 27 January 1966) was a submarine commander of the Royal Navy.[1]
Personal life
He was born in Izmir, to British parents, and lived in Turkey as a young boy.[1][2] He was the son of Helene Gertrude (Rees) and Henry Arnold Cumberbatch CMG, British Consul General of Smyrna 1896-1908.[1][2][3] With his wife, Pauline Ellen Laing (Congdon), his daughter is Amber Cumberbatch, his son is actor Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch and his grandson is actor Benedict Cumberbatch. He died in 1966 at Buckhurst Manor, Wadhurst, Sussex, formerly the home of his brother, Sir Hugh Carlton Cumberbatch.[1]
Career
Cumberbatch started a course at HMS Dolphin on 1 January 1923 and served from HMS Conquest on 13 April 1923 on completion of his training.[1] He commanded HMS Osiris (S13) from October 1934 and HMS Otway in 1937.[1][4]
